The Center for European Studies and Architecture in Riva San Vitale has continued to provide a home away from home for undergraduate programs. Despite the shock of September 11, interest in programs abroad continued to be popular with students of most colleges. The center provides a fine base for an enriching European experience for students and faculty.
The center pursued the university's research and outreach mission as well, cultivating relations with European institutions and helping establish and improve scholarly exchanges. It was particularly successful in deepening the partnership with the vigorous and innovative University of Italian Switzerland in Lugano.
A world-class conference on immunology was held at the center in the spring, bringing together distinguished scholars from American and European research centers and laying the foundation for continued cooperation between the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and the outstanding Center for Biomedicine of Bellinzona (the capital of the Ticino). The conference was reported in all the regional newspapers and on the television networks. As a result, the good name of Virginia Tech was placed prominently before the Swiss and Northern Italian public.
